This diminutive snuff bottle is truly a mini masterpiece! The clear glass bottle has been frosted on the inside, a technique used to make the glass opaque so that both sides could be painted. And what painting! The more detailed side depicts a scene of an idyllic countryside home on the bank of a winding clear blue river in the foreground. Shaded by the bowers of of large, leafy trees the house exudes warmth and safety. A truly idyllic haven. A mountain landscape is delicately rendered in the background.
The reverse side depicts a bird, a swallow perhaps? In mid flight, soaring through leafy branches. Perhaps the bowers of the tree protecting the home on the other side? As with the front landscape, this is painted on the inside of the glass with special tiny brushes. The skill and artistry required to execute these scenes in such minute detail is astonishing!
The glass domed stopper top has become detached from the snuff scoop but, is in perfect condition and sits exactly upon the bottle top. This could be lightly tacked down with any type of waxy adhesive if you wanted extra security from separation.
This bottle is from a collection of my Grandfather’s who collected antique snuff bottles. He died in 1963 and was a world traveler, visiting China dozens of times due of his career in textile importing and manufacturing. His collection was vast and varied and included bottles of polished and carved stone of many varieties. Please see my additional listings for more snuff bottles from this vast collection.
