This is old/new stock from the 1980s, that has been sitting in a storeroom bulk packaged and unopened since importation. This Man Friday Figure is an elaborately decorated copy of English Victorian Circa 1880 Brass Mantle Figures, titled Robinson Crusoe and Man Friday, however, these replicas have both been fashioned as useful letter racks. These lovely office desk accessories are a great solution to organize your mail on your desk and keep smaller things close at hand, they hold letters, envelopes, cards or paper, store your letters and notes to ensure seamless organisation, and keep your desk free from clutter in style. Forget the mass-produced ugly plastic or acrylic (easy to break) organizers that you will find at the local office supply stores. This could alternatively be used as a serviette or napkin holder. I have also found them useful as bookends.

#Robinson Crusoe is a well-read character in world literature, taken from a book by Daniel Defoe, published on April 1719. Crusoe was a fictional English seaman who during a storm is shipwrecked and the only survivor who finds himself on an uninhabited island where he spends the next 28 years. He salvages what he can from the wreck and establishes a life on the island. Crusoe eventually encounters a group of native people or as he calls them "The Savages,” because they take prisoners to the island to kill and eat them. One of the group’s captives escapes and Crusoe saves him and takes him back to his camp for safety, Crusoe names him Friday, which was the day he saved his Life and gradually teaches "Man Friday” to speak English. After many meetings with the local people and Europeans occur and almost three decades have passed on the island, Crusoe and Man Friday eventually leave with a group of pirates for England.

CONDITION: This brass rack is 80s Vintage, New Old Stock and it is in Very Good Condition. This has casting imperfections are characteristic of handmade cast brass, they make the item unique. It is very sturdy and strong and has been polished and has a clear coat of lacquer so you don't need to polish it, it is shining bright and ready to use and display. # Please note: The Photographs form part of the description; Super-sized photos can show up the finer details and conditions.

Indian Brass History: India has an ancient history of crafting exquisite brass art. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, Swansea in the UK had the largest and most important copper smelter. The smelted copper was exported to all parts of the world. Exports to India were transported via the British East India Company (EIC). Copper and brass were used for architectural fittings and machines around the world and largely started India's nascent industrialization. India remained the longest-standing foreign market for British copper well into the twentieth century when India eventually found its own supply of copper and knowledge to build a copper smelter. 

This British copper was used to manufacture decorative brass objects. Much of which was exported back to Britain and is known in the antique trade as 'Benares Brass' the real Benares Brass are highly sought antiques. Benares Brass is highly decorated by any combination of casting, engraving, embossing, enamelling, and burnishing. Benares Brass was named after the important Indian city which is now known as Varanasi, Varenisi, or Kaasi. Varanasi today is equally famous for its beautifully decorative brassware that is still made in the traditional way and is available in the Benares Brass Bazaar.

PACKAGING AND DISPATCH: You can be assured that I will pack your items extra well and they will be posted within 24 hours from the business day (MONDAY TO FRIDAY) of receiving payment. I post each day but the cut off time is 11 am if you order after this time your order will go in the following day's Post. Most of my items do not have original packaging and I use new heavy-duty bubble wrap and recycled cardboard, and paper as my packing materials. I use 500 grams, 1kg, 3kg, and 5kg Satchels to keep the postage cost down.

DAMAGED & LOST MAIL: All items over $10 are sent with Tracking and Insurance. If your item is lost in the post, you need to contact Auspost directly to claim your insurance.

FRAGILE MAIL: If you require a Fragile Service, you will need to find a courier company that offers this service. Australia Post Extra Cover Insurance will cover you for loss only. Australia Post does not offer a fragile service so items cannot be covered for damage in transit. I always add lots of extra weight to the postage cost to make sure your item is well packed making its journey to you intact. I use heavy-duty bubble wrap, newspaper and recycled boxes.

  • New - An item that has never been opened or removed from the manufacturer's sealing (if applicable).
  • As New - An item that looks like it has just had its shrink-wrap removed. No visible wear, the item is flawless and intact.

  • Very Good - Minor to moderate wear and tear. 
  • Good - Moderate wear and tear, but still has good years left.
  • Fair - Has lived a "full life" and has a distressed look with noticeable wear.
