Halfpenny was an 18th-century English engraver known for his
exquisite illustrated works. As a resident of York, Halfpenny began making
sketches drawings of the beautiful York Cathedral, sketches which he began
publishing in 1795. These drawings became highly desirable throughout England
and were popular amongst architects, Cathedral historians, and illustrators.
They were initially published in parts over the course of a few years and were
first published in their entirety in 1800.
This
impressive 1800 first edition of “Gothic Ornaments”
(Halfpenny’s
cathedral sketches) includes his works of columns, windows, arches, ceilings,
exterior and interior of the church, and even the highly coveted illustrations of gargoyles (pl.
94)!
