Américo Cruz was a country boy who felt the need to write poetry or décimas from an early age. He began painting his surroundings, houses, landscapes, and anything else that inspired him in 1955, including characters and themes from television programs. Colored pencils, cardboard, and paper became the magical tools that allowed him to let his imagination soar. The naivety of his characters and his authentic style of painting allow him to be nominated as a primitive or naive painter. In 1981, he presented his first exhibition at the "La Salud" Social Circle. After this first show, he participated in group exhibitions and popular art fairs in different parts of the country, receiving several mentions and awards during that time, including the Prize of the VI Fair of Sancti Spiritus in 1983 and the Painting Prize of the Meeting of Craftsmen, Painters and Popular Sculptors held in Madruga, Havana, in 1984. He received the Commemorative Medal for the 25th Anniversary of the Amateur Artists Movement in 1985.

Américo Cruz, fue un niño de campo y desde temprana edad sintió la necesidad de hacer poesías o décimas, ya desde 1955 comienza a pintar su entorno, casas, paisajes y todo cuanto le motivara, aun personajes y temas de la programación televisiva. Los lápices de colores, cartones y papeles se fueron convirtiendo en sus manos en las mágicas herramientas que le permitirían hacer volar su imaginación. La ingenuidad de sus personajes y su autentica forma de hacer nos permite nominarlo como un pintor primitivo o naif. En 1981 presenta su primera exposición en el Círculo Social "La Salud". Después de esta primera muestra, participa en exposiciones colectivas y ferias de arte popular en diferentes lugares del país, recibiendo en todo ese tiempo varias menciones y premios como;  el Premio de la VI Feria de Sancti Spíritus en 1983, y el Premio de Pintura del Encuentro de Artesanos, Pintores y Escultores Populares celebrado en Madruga, La Habana, en 1984.Recibe la Medalla Conmemorativa por el XXV Aniversario del Movimiento de Artistas Aficionados en 1985.
