Because of unique and extremely laborious work, great expression of creativity, identity and tool for social cohesion, the Romania’s traditional carpet craftsmanship is included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The value of this piece of art comes from a long time history, those carpets were so valuable and unique since ancient times that, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Royal House of Romania established the royal carpet weaving workshops that would promote traditional rugs as representative fabrics in environments other than rural ones. The most valuable pieces made in those workshops were promoted as emblems of national identity, at universal exhibitions in Europe and America and were highly praised and appreciated. 

The originality, unity and artistic value of Romanian rugs - especially of those made in Oltenia region (just like this one here), are due to the skill and ingenuity of the generations of women who worked on them, integrating motifs and symbols of wide European and extra-European circulation into the decorative compositions: geometric (the oldest), vegetal, zoomorphic or anthropomorphic, with various and deep meanings stylization and abstraction, reaching a high degree of sophistication.

Well thicker and dense than normal carpets, designed to withstand everyday wear, this rug was made to last over 100 years. 

These types of rugs have become incrisingly rare, as it is a painstaking and extremely laborious work, the weaving technique is passed on from grandmothers and grand-grandmothers and very few young women have the patience to sit for hours and learn the secrets of weaving, making the craft almost on the verge of extinction.

This rug contain natural lanolin oils from best wool quality (hence the shining and fatty look) and made of tight weaving. This makes the rug naturally stain resistant and one of the strongest methods to make a hand-made rug that holds up to everyday use for many generations. It can be placed under the heavy furniture without problem. It will provide also a great therapy for feet.
