The burner comes with an ashtray. So you place ashtray inside the Burner first, then charcoal and lastly incense on top of the charcoal.
The ashtray has holes with two purposes:
- To aid in air circulation to allow the charcoal to burn properly
- To allow ashes to fall below and keep the coal burning longer
