On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II suffered a grave attack in St. Peter’s Square. On that same date a year later, the Holy Father went to Portugal to thank Our Lady of Fátima for her protection and to renew the consecration of the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1991 he made his third visit to Portugal, pilgrimage to Fatima on the 10th anniversary of Ağca's assassination attempt on his life and 74th of the 1917 Marian apparitions there. In that year he also visited Madeira and Azores Archipelagos, as shown in the voyage route map on the reverse of the medal.
