A Genuine 103 Year Old Silver Sixpence coin. Struck by the Royal Mint in London in 1920. Very Fine VF grade.

A superb example of the nation's favourite coin, in circulation from 1551 up until 1980 when it ceased to be legal tender. Though the last circulation sixpences were issued in 1967, then in 1970 the Royal Mint issued one final production run of sixpences in proof condition for coin collectors.

Made of 50% silver and 50% copper/nickel this is a fine example of a 1920 sixpence. 100 years ago, the first World War had just ended, there was a difficult recession after the war, before all of this gave way to the roaring 20's. The coin is also a fine example of British craftsmanship, not only in look but also feel, the quality of the coin striking was exceptional. After 1946 sixpences were no longer issued in silver.

The front of the coin shows King George V (1910-1936). The reverse shows a lion standing on the royal crown. The coin measures 19mm, the weight is 2.83 grams.

It's a tradition for the Bride's father to give the bride a sixpence to wear in her shoe on her wedding day 'A sixpence for her shoe'.

Also a Victorian tradition to include a sixpence in the Christmas pudding. The person who found it was said to be lucky for the whole of next year and the 'lucky sixpence' tradition continues today. No other coin has ever quite been able to replace it.
