Antique, Finely Inlaid, Syrian Marquetry Cigarette Case. Some losses but a beautiful piece dating from the first half of the 20th century - probably.
Skilled marquetry of this type has been practiced in the region for millennia often using rare timbers and sometimes mother of pearl. First appearances date about 4000 yrs ago in Mesopotamia. The craft is still practiced today in some regions, and quite a few modern examples exist as tourist pieces. The box is craftsman made - not mechanically constructed like more modern examples. Ideal addition to any collection.
