This is a rare July 2nd, 1911 New York "Morning Telegraph" broadsheet tabloid featuring actress GRACE LA RUE of the "FOLIES BERGERE" on the front cover and the "BEAUTIES" of the Fifth Annual Edition of the "ZIEGFELD FOLLIES of 1911" on the first inside page. (The "Ziegfeld Follies of 1911" opened June 26th, 1911 at the Jardin de Paris atop the New York Theatre in New York City and closed September 2nd, 1911 after 80 performances.) ..... The "ZIEGFELD FOLLIES" were the most lavish musical productions on Broadway between 1907 and 1931. Blending beauty, music and talent with over 100 graceful and elegant "Ziegfeld Girls" in priceless gowns, jewels and flowers, audiences knew they would be treated to the most memorable evening possible. The key to the ongoing success of the "Follies", even in the worst of times was producer FLORENZ ZIEGFELD, JR. ..... Historical background: The FOLIES BERGERE opened on April 27th, 1911 as a Dinner Theatre with Vaudeville and survived for only five months. The theater reopened on October 20th, 1911 as the Fulton Theatre, a legitimate playhouse. The theater was renamed the Helen Hayes Theatre in 1955. "THE MORNING TELEGRAPH" was a New York City broadsheet newspaper, first published as the "Sunday Mercury" from 1839 to 1897 and became "The Morning Telegraph" in December 1897 ..... DETAILS: The oversized eight page tabloid section measures 17 1/4" X 22 3/4" inches. The last scanned image is shown as a more accurate depiction of the vivid images which for some reason do not photograph that well ..... CONDITION: There is considerable edge wear, light soiling to the top right corner of the cover and tearing at the outside edge of the heavy center fold. Despite these flaws, this rare newspaper section will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
