His special irreverence is for too inside-rock refined. Most people simply don't know what he's about. Other finds his taste questionable. And still other don't get beyond the conclusion that as a warbler he's something of a pigeon. Yet with his new "Normal" (Capricorn)- which is considerably more musical than either of his pervious records -  Mull emerges as a comic song lyricist as fast, facile and focused as those big-league wordsmiths Randy Newman and Dan Hicks. Each of the 13 "Normal" tunes revolves around a sparkling, self-mocking turn of phrase that makes fun of everybody - everybody - with a dazzlingly polished smirk: 

I'm tired of rock 'n' rollin' 

  lets get married, honey, let's go bowlin

Throw away our pot and acid,

  spend the weekend at Lake Placid.

Let's see who can be the most boring

  You do the dishes, honey, I'll start snoring

We'll show everyone in town we're not 

  deranged

Let's you and I get normal for a change

Life is nuts just livin' her with you
