“THE ARTS OF SHREVEPORT”

Print of Watercolor Painting

11 x 14 inches

This is a print of an original watercolor painting of the Shreveport’s art culture!!! My hometown boasts of many artistic organizations, galleries, and historical places!

HISTORY:

•The R. S. Barnwell Memorial Garden & Art Center, established in 1970, was an artist community with multiple art shows as well as flaunting Shreveport’s only jewel box, the conservatory full of exotic plants! Today it is an aquarium.

Centenary College is the oldest college west of the Mississippi! This private college has approximately 600 students. It has the Shell, an outdoor open theatre which hosts outdoor symphony concerts. The Meadows Museum has the only collection of Jean Despujols (French American Artist) artwork.

The Stand Theatre is the crown jewel of Shreveport! Ballets, movies, concerts, and many other events have been held here since 1916!

Shreveport is the official home of the Louisiana Hayride, sponsored by the local KWKH radio station! This popular event had performances by Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Sr., and Johnny Cash, among many other entertainers!

The Red River Revel, a local festival with music, handcrafted art, activities, and food, started in 1976 by the Junior League. Held annually in downtown Shreveport near the riverfront for over 45 years!

The Norton Art Gallery is Shreveport’s version of the met in NYC! Since 1966, this museum has displayed an impressive collection of artwork, from Cassett, to Remington, to Clementine Hunter, to Charles Russell. Walk outside through gorgeous gardens which burst with azaleas during the spring!

Many other Shreveport organizations included in this mini poster print!

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Kristi Jones was named after Howard Chandler Christy, who was a 20th century illustrator and distant relative. Kristi is also related to Clyde Connell, one of Louisiana's most famous female artists. Kristi developed an innate artistic ability from being raised in an artistic home, which had an art studio and library. Both of her parents obtained art degrees. Her father has placed (numerous times) in the top tenth percentile in state and federal duck stamp art contests, and her mother has sold work at a local gallery.

Kristi studied art at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts (NOAFA), and is also self-taught. She has created mosaics and sold her tropical jewelry at the annual Red River Revel, and many other local festivals. Presently, she has turned to painting, and has sold work both locally and nationally. She has exhibited at shows and galleries, including several group shows in northwest Caddo Parish, including Centenary College's Meadows Museum of Art and Centenary's Magale Library, Artspace in downtown Shreveport, Smith Mason Gallery, and Shreveport Trading Company.

In December 2011, Kristi was awarded a visual arts grant from the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC), and became a Juried Roster Artist in 2012. In 2015, she was commissioned to create 29 paintings for the new University Medical Center of New Orleans. She is a member of Louisiana Artists, Inc. and the Hoover Watercolor Society. Most of her work depicts the flavors, architecture, landscapes and culture of Louisiana and the South.
