  • The nickel is also known as: 5¢ piece, five cents, five-cent piece, 1/20th of a US Dollar, $0.05, "nick", "Jeff-Head".
  • The Obverse-side Text Inscriptions: IN GOD WE TRUST LIBERTY (year)
  • The Obverse-side Images: Thomas Jefferson Portait
  • The Reverse-side Text Inscriptions: E PLURIBUS UNUM MONTICELLO FIVE CENTS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
  • The Reverse-side Images: Jefferson's Monticello located in Virginia. It is Italian for "Little Mountain".
  • Both the obverse and reverse designs are by Felix Oscar Schlag, born September 4, 1891 and died March 9, 1974. Starting in 1966 to 2004 the design added his initials, FS, below the obverse portrait.
  • Thomas Jefferson born April 13, 1743 (April 2, 1743 on the old style Calendar) and died on July 4, 1826. He was the 3rd President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was the 2nd Vice President under John Adams and the first Secretary of the Sate under George Washington. An author and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He built Monticello as his main residence, starting in 1768.
  • Liberty is defined as the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
  • E PLURIBUS UNUM roughly translates from Latin to: Out of many, one - which was the common motto from the USA seal from the late 1700's until 1956 when the motto officially became In God We Trust. This coin bears both sayings.
