Lawson Cypress 'Royal Gold' Conifer Tree | 30cm tall 🇬🇧 UK Grown
‘Royal Gold’ larger growing cultivar boasts radiant golden leaves in a conical form. It’s branches spread out, revealing scaly, sprayed foliage. Preferring lower humidity and cooler climates, C. lawsoniana, also known as Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, is a slender, coniferous tree. Its branches sprawl out to display scaly, sprayed foliage. Female cones feature a wrinkled, reddish-brown hue, occasionally with a glaucous tint. Male cones, on the other hand, exhibit a deep bluish-black in their bud phase.
Size
The plant has an upright, columnar habit, making it suitable for narrow spaces or as a focal point in the garden
Foliage
The foliage is primarily green, but the tips of the branches have a distinctive creamy white or light-yellow colouration, especially during spring and early summer. This contrast provides an appealing visual texture and is especially striking when placed alongside plants with darker foliage.
Growth Habit
It has a dense and bushy growth habit, making it ideal for providing structure and form in gardens, especially in rock gardens, borders, or as part of mixed plantings.
Care and Requirements
Like other Chamaecyparis lawsoniana varieties, ‘Royal Gold’ prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. It’s important to protect it from harsh winds and excessively wet conditions, as this can damage the plant or lead to fungal issues. Also try to avoid very exposed positions.
Pest and Diseases
While generally robust, it can be susceptible to certain pests and diseases, especially when stressed. It’s essential to watch out for cypress aphids and to monitor for symptoms of diseases like cypress canker.
Soil
Moist but well-drained (will tolerate most soil types)
Hardiness
Fully hardy down to -15C
Pruning
Best pruned in late winter or early spring. First, remove dead/diseased branches. They’re sensitive to heavy pruning and won’t regenerate from old wood so avoid heavy cutting. Maintain natural shape with minimal cuts. Focus on thinning for airflow. Use sharp, sanitised tools to avoid spreading disease.
Ultimate height
2.5–4 metres
Time to ultimate height
10–20 years
Ultimate spread
