ORIGINAL JACKO VASSILEV (b 1951) 'THE POSTMAN' GELATIN SILVER PHOTOGRAPH PLUS 3 OTHER ORIGINAL PORTRAITS
This is just a great original group. I actually bought a collection of original Jacko Vassilev photographs from someone who inherited them from his mother. The mother had a relationship with Vassilev and these photographs come directly from the artist. I have kept most of them in my personal collection but also figured I would offer out a few examples to the collectors out there. For those not familiar with Vassilev I have included his biography below. This is a grouping of 4 original photographs. Included in this lot is probably one of his most famous images. Entitled "The Postman" it is from Bulgaria in 1971. Based on my understanding, this printing is from around that period. A wonderful gelatin silver print measuring 6 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches, it is in as printed condition. Artist's original stamp verso as well as some pencil notation. Included with this photograph are 3 other portrait photographs by Vassilev. They are 3 other portraits that are most likely from Bulgaria or Romania. I cannot find them on his website to identify who they are. They all measures about 6 1/2-7 x 4 1/2 inches and are all stamped verso as well. Really outstanding original photographs by the important photographer. I have found some of these priced for thousands of dollars. A great chance to acquire some wonderful original photographs. For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from a gallery that sells his work reads: "Bulgarian photographer, Jacko Vassilev, is famous for his politically charged and revealing portraits of his fellow countrymen. He began creating these important works in 1972, when the country was still under communist rule. Vassilev’s work was frowned upon by government officials of the time for they felt that his depiction of the country’s poverty shined a negative light on communism. His studio was even raided at one point. He was not able to receive a diploma in photography until 1990. He then went on to work for the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture as Art Photographer. Vassilev captures the subjects of his photographs with a sense of love and respect. He has a profound appreciation for the history of his country and the struggles that his people have endured. “I really want to preserve all we have in Bulgaria…At least (these photographs are) something that will remain for future generations.” Vassilev prints his own photographs in small editions. They are processed in limited edition silver gelatin prints on authentic Bulgarian Fohar paper. His work has been exhibited across the United States and Europe. His has exhibited with Cartier-Bresson in Toulouse, France and Contre-jour has published a monograph of his pictures. He has received numerous awards for his artistry."
