Laos Reclining Buddha - To appreciate the beauty of this piece is to understand the Lao people who produced it and the Laos Kingdom from which it came.

Title: Antique Rare Reclining Sakyamuni Altar Buddha. 18th C.

Overview: An exquisite 18th to 19th century bronze sculpture of a Lao Buddha beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved, measuring 31.0.0 inches(78.74cm) in length.

Description: The altar sculpture is superbly cast in the reclining posture, depicted wearing a long monanstic pleat-less robe worn in the ‘Open’ mode, leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered, in which it appears to defy gravity by clinging to the body exactly as if the image were upright. The presence of an undergarment extends below the hem of the outer garment. A pleated flap falls down to the robe hem, with the belt about the waist.
xxxx The Lao image’s gentle face portrays a smiling expression and displays a sense of calm and spiritual enlightenment, characterized by his prominent eyes lowered as if resting in a meditative state. The nose with flared nostrils is broad and flat, the mouth with a defining line around his lips, and long earlobes almost extends to the shoulders. The hands are beautifully carved with elongated fingers, an influence used by the neighboring country Thailand, during the 13th to 16th century - Sukhothai School of Art.

The head is covered in small pin hair curls, enclosed by a narrow jeweled band, separating the hairline from his forehead, surmounted by a hemispherical ‘Ushnisha’ which terminates into a tall Lotus finial, adorned with pockets where precious stones once existed.

xxxx The brush gold-leaf Buddha image rest gracefully on an altar-like pedestal, finished in a maroon lacquer pigment, with the underlaying bronze surface naturally aged to a rich chocolate brown patina.
Note worthy observation – In memory of the Buddha and his doctrines, mounds of earth were heaped up and relics of his body placed on top. Buddha is seen not as a man but as the doctrine in human form, a reminder of a set of precepts by which one can chart the course of his life and his individual actions.

xxxxRemarks: Again we would like to emphasize, that this unique style of a Lao Buddha image in the Reclining mudra is extremely rare and difficult to find in today’s market, anywhere in the world.
