American Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is a herbaceous perennial plant in the pokeweed family (Phytolaccaceae) growing up to 8 feet height.

Organic, Fresh seeds, harvested 08/2023
Life Cycle: Perennial. Emerges in the spring and flowers from summer through fall. Berries turn black at maturity.

It has significant toxicity. Despite this, there do exist proper methods of cooking and eating the young leaves in early spring, as well as medicinal uses for the root when prepared in a tincture (for professionals only). Poke is a traditional southern Appalachian food (boiled several times only).

Plant in Fall.  Plants will start appearing in Spring.  Seeds can be germinated slowly over a period of 2 months at room temperature. Sow 2-3 times as much as you need. You can also try soaking the seed in the fridge for 2 weeks. Change cold water for fresh daily - some say distilled works better. It likes rich soil and full sun or partial shade and is good in open woodland. It thrives on hot summers.

*SEEDS DISCLAIMER* Most specialty seeds we offer are NOT fast to germinate.  Many take several weeks, months, and some even up towards a year depending on dormancy, region, season etc. It is important that the buyer understands that seeds are perishable products and seed germination can be adversely affected by such factors as mold/fungus, bugs, temperature, moisture content, light intensity, dormancy, care, contamination of planting media among many other reasons.

Germination recommendations are sent with each order and the buyer is free to research and use their own methods. Floating seeds do not always indicate that the seed is not viable. Many times, it is a misconception because the seed does not have the density to sink in water. Accordingly, The Plant Attraction does not guarantee seeds to perform properly regardless of conditions or buyer's methods or soil/water/lighting.
