  • What it was: The 2011 New River Experience was a service project undertaken by the Boy Scouts of America under leadership of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society, in the New River National Park and Preserve (aka New River Gorge National River). The site is part of the National Park system, maintained by the US Department of the Interior and the National Park Service in southern West Virginia, USA. The 2011 service project primarily included improving the Garden Grand Hike and Bike Trails, removal of invasive species. There were also additional smaller projects as well. Things like fixing mountain biking trails, crushing rocks with sledgehammers, moving boulders and digging up trees, completing over 12 miles of bike trail for use by the general public. The on-site part of the project took spanned 4 weeks and about 400 to 500 participant Scouts volunteered their time, labor, and own travel expense. It was a precedent setter. The format and leadership used in this service project then expanded to many other National and State Parks around the country.
