This started life as a carpenter's toolchest, made by a master carpenter of pine each side one wide board, joined at corners by visible dovetail joints, the wide boards prevented from warpage by oak framing top and bottom.Top board is 18 inches wide. Notches inside indicate it once had an insert or divider. This is a masterpiece of carpentry. It remained in the Hathaway family of Westfield, Chautauqua County New York, when my Mother, Virginia Wareham Dean bought it at their estate sale. Unfortunately at that sale , a 200 pound woman sat on and cracked the top board. Virginia Dean was an artist, restored and refinished it with Waterlox, patined inside with Old Soldier Blue. I received it as a graduation present from Colgate University 1968, then took it with me when I moved to Beacon Hill Boston. In late 1972, I was admiring the 1937 Grand Banks Schooner HARRY W ADAMS, built in the same yard as the Bluenose, in NEWPORT, RI, that was enroute to the Bahamas. I talked my way aboard as volunteer crew, planning a 2 week vacation. By the time we reached Florida, I had been hired as Engineer, and spent the winter in the Bahamas. Just before Christmas, I flew back to Boston for my tool box, loaded all else needed for 6 months at sea in this sea chest. It remained with me on the schooner until Spring, when I left the schooner on a 33 foot sloop for 2 months of cruising the Bahama Out Islands. It was in the salon until we reached San Juan, then sea chest and I moved ashore, into an old Spanish guest house with wrought iron railings and ceiling fans. The sea chest moved again by air when I returned to Boston. each time it flew, the way was smoothed by rum, which was as valuable as trade goods in the 1970's as my Rhode Island ancestors learned centuries ago. With the sea chest is included a copy of my Unpublished manuscript on the last successful Voyage of the Schooner Harry W Adams; which discusses the travels of this sea chest in 1872-1973. This was last refinished over 63 years ago and varnish is getting a little old, and new hinge screws should be installed, but handle hardware is solid. Blue interior paint is fine.... I am now located in Sebring the Heart of Old Florida. Thank you, James Dean
