Antique Original Newton & Co 46 Magic Lantern Glass Slides created from Kings College School on the subject of Wood Carving - the set was for Educational purposes and totally 70 slides of which 46 are in this Original Newton Catalogue Wood Slide Box - with Newton Optician to the Queen 3 Fleet street stamped inside the lid of the box, Glos CC on the top and Education Committee of the Gloucestershire County Council on the front on a paper sheet with some feint marks including 1900 and a name, box has brass lock (no key) and padded compartments, scuffs and marks consistent with age - the slides are hand numbered and titled in white ink and include 1-13,16 (twice) 17-28 and 34 to 52 - the Newton Catalogue relevant page is included and lists the title of each slide and another page shows the box price too! - the slides are in good used condition and are intact and very clear - the first slide shows students at the college with staff, the rest show fine examples of various wood carvings - these slides usually retail for around 10 pounds each - so to have this box full part set and the box is wonderful - please check photographs which form part of the description and do help -very collectible - don't miss it!
Newton & Co were active as lantern and slide manufacturers from 1852 until after the
Second World War, based at various addresses in London. They produced
vast quantities of slides, mainly educational and religious subjects,
and took over the businesses of various other makers. Newton developed
some of the most important innovations in the technical history of the
magic lantern, including the three and four wick burner. These were
developed as complete units for easy replacement and to dissipate the
heat inside the lighting unit rather than through the lantern. The Company is listed in Graces Guide to British Industry as follows: c.1704 The exact date the company was established is not known, but the signature of J Newton,
the then head of the firm, with the date 26 October 1704 (the year
before his relation, Sir Isaac Newton, was knighted) proves the
existence of the business early in the reign of Queen Anne. It is the
oldest firm of scientific instrument makers in the world.In 1893 recorded an optical lantern for scientific use. By 1901 Presumably one of the 3 suppliers to the Admiralty of wireless telegraphy equipment, the order totaling 54 sets.
