Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1897-98. Alfred Mame & Fils. National Edition. Complete in 2 volumes. French. Heavily Illustrated

Jacques-James Tissot (1836-1902) was a well know French painter, illustrator, and caricaturist. He was born to a drapery merchant and a milliner and decided to pursue a career in art at a young age and his contemporaries included well known artists such as Monet and Degas among others. After completing the Woman of Paris in 1885 Tissot experienced a religious vision at the Church fo St. Sulpice, leading him to revive his Catholic faith and spend the remainder of his life making paintings about biblical events.

These fine volumes are bound in leather and include Three hundred and sixty-five compositions from the four Gospels with notes and explanatory drawing. The beautiful illustrations are in colour and black and white and fill the many pages with a great vibrancy. Not only beautiful for their religious depictions, these paintings also show off the genius of the artist, Tissot. Covers show mild wear as might be expected, with corners bumped and slightly rubbed, but interior is tightly bound with clear and clean text. Outside of a small ex-libris stamp on the front end-page the copies are unmarked.
