On February 14th, 1820, the Duke Of Berry was assassinated outside the opera with a plunged knife through the chest by his saddler Louis Pierre Louvel. Louvel was a man loyal to Bonaparte, vowed on the day of the Restoration to exterminate all Bourbons. He had no particular quarrel with the Duke: it’s just that he considered the his family traitors whose presence dishonored the nation.

What's especially interesting about the man who assassinated the Duke was his interrogation. His loyalty to Bonaparte completely separates him from religion as he admits he is a catholic who sometimes believes but fights for his nation above all else. Napoleon started giving citizens a more national French idea, that went farther than religion to his radical supporters

This book contains one of the few rare fold-out frontispiece showing the assassination first hand. The frontispiece was published separately (probably simultaneously) by the author and bound within this copy. No other copy found with this frontispice and only one copy traced.
