5 Lati (Lats) coin comes from Latvia in Baltic Region located in Northern Europe.
The coin was put into circulation in 1929, 11 years after Latvia had gained independence for the first time from Russian Empire. And it was made until 1932. It was used in interwar period in the so called "Latvian First Republic" up until 1940 when USSR annexed Latvia again. There were plans to re-release new silver 5 Lats in 1941 with Latvian president Karlis Ulmanis displayed before the occupation happened. It has a Latvian national symbol "Milda" displayed on abverse and National coat of Arms of Latvia on reverse.
