The Blurb

Aldo Cassidy is a cautious man. He has a pleasant family, drives a safe, expensive car and wears luxurious clothes. But his soothing existence is upended when he meets Shamus and Helen - a dazzling, bohemian couple who are everything he is not. As he is drawn into their reckless and unpredictable orbit, all that Cassidy thought he understood about his orderly life begins to unravel.

Told with le Carré's lacerating wit and penetrating observation, The Naive and Sentimental Lover is an acerbic satire of middle-class hypocrisies.

The Book

This is a RARE Uncorrected Proof in of the 1st Print of the 1st UK hardback edition published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1971

[In Proof wrapper, with subtle differences to final edition]

An excellent example of this early proof, with some creasing to spine, and a little spotting to covers, which the dry glue has become a little loose on the binding at the rear.

The oversized proof jacket has some understandable creasing and minor wear. One or two tiny nicks.

Rare, we can trace no other example at auction in the proof dust-jacket (this copy from Forum Auctions), which has the most subtle differences to the jacket that accompanied the first edition. The only difference we can find is the addition of parentheses to the front flap at the foot of the (world’s longest) blurb, and no indication on the rear flap that the blurb is continued (further!) from the front flap.

We have a huge collection of other John le Carré proofs and 1st printings available, including many signed copies.
