In Search of Hoot Owl: https://www.odafferfamily.com/in-search-of-hoot-owl/

"As I was talking with a group of friends a few years ago and … I tossed out the rather innocuous question, " What was your favorite book when you were a child?" I said "Hoot-Owl." … I told them about the book and shared that I didn't have a copy, nor had I seen a copy since 1942 …

Thus began my search for "Hoot-Owl." I ran across an interview on the internet with Charlotte Hinger, an author of mystery books... Interviewer: What is the very first book you remember reading and loving? Charlotte Hinger:  "Hoot-Owl"! It was the very first book I ever read…"Knowing the author helped me dig down and actually find reference to the book on the Internet, and I was again shocked by what I found on eBay … $6,400 for a copy."

Condition: Good overall. Front and rear boards are lightly soiled, with wear to all edges and hard bumps and wear to all corners. Owner's inscription on first frontmatter page, in elegant script – apparently Effie M. Conrad bought the book in 1936 for 84 cents. Binding is solid, with no damage to front or rear gutters. Title page has ~1 inch tear at lower edge. Pages and plates are bright, but scattered smudges and smaller tears and dings scattered throughout. Some tears up to 1-2 inches were repaired with vintage tape (now yellowed). Most pages are without issue, but our photographs emphasize the concerns.

About the Illustrator: 'Kate Seredy (1899 –1975) was an American writer and illustrator of children's books. She won the Newbery Medal once, the Newbery Honor twice, the Caldecott Honor once, and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. Most of her books were written in English, which was not her first language. Seredy had twelve children's books published, but she considered herself an illustrator before an author. She had a unique style, primarily based on drawing, and considered her books"an excuse for making pictures".'  (from Wikipedia)
