Snoopy joined the Beagle Scouts May 13, 1974 as a “tenderpaw” and quickly rose to the rank of a fully vested Beagle Scout leader. He became a "Beagle Scout" on June 9, 1974.

His first appearance, which was with Lucy, he wore a field cap. Later he would wear a Campaign Hat (aka Ranger Hat).

The comic strip ran from October 2, 1950 for Dailies and January 6, 1952 for Sundays. It ended on January 3, 2000 for Dailies and February 13, 2000 Sundays.

Tenderpaw is a spoof on the real boy scout rank of Tenderfoot. At the time in Boy Scouting this was the introductory and first rank. Then a joining rank was added that took the role of introductory and is called Scout with a simple fleur-de-lis. Tenderfoot has the BSA Universal Fleur-de-lis with two stars, spread eagle, and shield.
