JEAN PAUL GAULTIER “FIGHT RACISM” JEANS - AW97

Jean Paul Gaultier carved out a name for himself as a world-renowned designer by channeling a unique connection between himself and various cultural subsections. Gaultier got his start in the industry at eighteen when he landed a job as an assistant, for Patou, studying under the tutelage of Pierre Cardin. After developing his craft with Cardin and then later with Michel Goma at Patou, Gaultier launched his own line in 1976. Quickly garnering attention for his outlandish and extravagant designs Gaultier became the bad boy of fashion. Channeling different influences from, punk, BDSM to eastern garments Gaultier infused his own provocative imagery into these many subcultures through his unique designs. These jeans boldly display one of Gaultier’s most famous motifs: “Fight Racism.” Recently revitalized by Supreme, the monochromatic pop print imagery engulfs the entire body of the original iteration. The pants are done in a straight leg cut and feature metal hardware throughout and a Jean Paul Gaultier patch on the back of the waist.

In this collection, the french designer launched a graphic prints series in a newspaper effect that advocate the fight against racism. At close sight, you can appreciate young anti-fascists with a very strong skinhead aesthetic, wearing clothes with the message “Fight against racism”, including anarchist and hippy symbolism.

Jean Paul is known as the “enfant terrible”, which refers to a person whose behavior or ideas are uncommon or out of the ordinary. He is a designer who has always been distinguished by a strong activist attitude in his work.

He was the first designer to look for models that represented women from different sizes, races and ages. Also, he has eliminated the use of fur in his collections and has made big amount of donations to organizations that fight against AIDS and collaborated with foundations in his shows and important charity projects with the same purpose. All this was after the death of his business and sentimental partner, Francis Menuge by that illness.
