2 x Bespoke Long Curtains

This curtain pair have been made by hand, by me in response to customers repeatedly requesting very long curtains, frustrated by finding long lengths hard to come by. I will be making and listing more in due course.

For this pair, I used large swathes of green crushed vintage velvet and combined this gorgeous looking fabric with a brown velvet stripe at the top and a deep green stripe to balance it at the bottom. The surface was then adorned with a lovely ruffled retro brown and green ribbon to draw the colours together. This was placed horizontally in two places, all tacked by hand and then sewn.

The velvet changes colour, going from a minty green to a lighter almost silvery green depending on how the light catches the fabric.

An unusual trellis header tape was chosen to complete the luxurious look.

These are completely unique, I will not be making another pair.

They are fully lined and have been cleaned prior to listing.

Header Type: The header tape is trellis, brand new from reclaimed end of roll stock, it works the same as pencil pleat - just pull and gather the fabric to the desired width.

Fabric Measurements (unpleated): Each curtain is 136cm width and 265cm drop or the online converter states this is 54inches width x 104inches drop. The hem is 9cm if you are thinking of lengthening.

Modifications or Repairs: The curtains are handmade, bespoke, using preloved recycled fabrics and trims.

Flaws Noted: On inspection, to the front, it is possible to see old horizontal stitching lines at the top in the brown header tape area, under the brown ribbon and in one corner, in the darker green velvet.

There is a narrow band of light fading to the mint green crushed velvet section. There are three lines and an area of fluffing/pilling. The edge looks a bit uneven and needs a press into place and there are a couple of other flaws (all can be seen in the pics.)

To the back, the lining is joined horizontally to provide the length.

Environment:

  • I am passionate about recycling and am aiming for zero waste. I have processes in place for fabric scraps to be recycled and reused in a number of ways. Offcuts are used to make tiebacks, tieback cords, tassels & distributed to craftspeople for using in powertexing, toymaking & similar creative activities. Threads/scraps are saved for use to create surface texture when felting, as tassel skirts or for textile beads.
  • Paper used is recycled.
  • I use second hand sewing machines - a retro Viking, a Singer (used to be my granny's) and a second-hand Brother Overlocker.
  • If sundries are required such as cotton & header tapes I aim to purchase preloved, not brand new.
  • I tried using eco-friendly paper parcel tape but it was counterproductive - there was a lot of waste - many rolls purchased from different vendors had multiple layers glued together and didn't secure heavy parcels well. I now buy business rejects, so parcels may arrive with parcel tape advertising a redundant firm. Inner/outer packaging is recycled plastic, cardboard etc.
  • I use machine hand wash for most material, using the least amount of water/energy and dry outside on the washing line whenever possible. I have goals in place to reduce the amount of washing chemicals used. I will continue to monitor, review and improve.

About Me:

  • I have Ebayed since 2002. Redundancy in 2020 prompted a craft room clear out of preloved fabric & kick-started a small home business. I began collecting material from two local Derbyshire companies trying to primarily focus mainly on damaged items - restoring, repairing & remaking for reuse.
  • 3 years on, textiles are harder to source locally so to enable the business to survive, I had to look further afield. I now buy from private individuals, organisations, businesses (large/small), charities, antique shops, church sales & recently even a closing theatre sale!
  • Difficulties obtaining textiles encouraged creativity. Small single curtains are remade into bespoke items. Offcuts create unique curtain tiebacks, matching cords & textile beads. Experiments using lace, dyeing & embellishments began.
  • You can follow me on INSTA @revampedcurtains to see projects in progress. I sell only here on Ebay.
