Up for sale, a 1960s Vox Mark XII 12-string in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. This Vox was produced in Recanati, Italy by the Eko company, delivering quintessential ‘60s looks and sounds with its iconic teardrop body shape. This particular guitar features a replacement (also vintage) neck but is otherwise 100% original, and the original neck is included. Weighing 8lbs, this Vox has all the chime, sparkle, and chorusing shimmer of the best 12-strings, and there are vital, lively sounds at each position on the three-way pickup selector. The neck pickup is bell-like and full, the middle pickup has a percussive kick and sweet, smooth treble response, and the bridge pickup is slightly thinner with a glistening, snappy quality that captures the glassy articulation of the ebony fretboard. This Mark XII has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, easy-playing action, and accurate intonation. The maple neck has a full-feeling C-shaped profile carve with generous shoulders and ideal heft, arguably more playable than some other electric 12-strings being produced concurrently in the ‘60s, measuring .885” deep at the 1st fret and .970” at the 12th. On the ebony fingerboard, the slender fretwire benefits from a level and crown, only exhibiting a hint of wear beneath the plain strings on the crowns of frets 1-2, and this guitar plays cleanly up the 25” scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod. The fretboard width is 1 7/8" at the zero fret just forward of the aluminum nut. On the headstock, the original Vox-branded tuning machines have been transferred to the current neck, turning smoothly and holding accurate pitch, and the “Made in Italy by Vox” silkscreen text is intact on the back of the headstock. All of the electronics function as intended, with the pickups governed by a three-way selector switch, Master Volume knob, and independent Tone knobs for the Neck and Middle pickups. The wiring harness features untouched solder and original components. The original trio of knurled knobs is intact, and the hardware is all quite clean, including the pickup surrounds, Bigsby-style vibrato and bridge with threaded saddles. The spring on the vibrato is fairly soft and actuates very easily. Cosmetic wear on the gloss Sunburst finish includes a number of minor dings and finish scratches on the body as a whole, largely relegated to the perimeter and back. The neck profile retains its smooth gloss. The original teardrop hardshell case is included, along with the original neck. All three original latches function, and the handle is intact. The second included neck cannot be reinstalled without truss rod servicing and fretwork.
