This is an outstanding Ptolemaic map of the Middle East, presented on a trapezoidal projection. It covers the region from present-day Iraq and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers westward to the Mediterranean Sea and the island of Cyprus, and from southern Turkey and Armenia Maior to Arabiae Felicis Pars. Bedouin encampments are shown in the interior of 'Arabia Deserta.' This was published by G. Ziletti and is from the third edition of Ruscelli's translation of Ptolemy's Geographia. Italian text on verso. This work is among the first to utilize copper plate engraving, in place of wood, and copper plates were used for maps for three plus centuries henceforth.
