Description: Mounted Photograph. Circa 1885 - but not later than 1896, when Professor Buell and the CPR parted ways. The Stoney Creek was the highest timber bridge ever built, and at the time, the second highest bridge in North America. It was rebuilt in steel in 1894. Buell is famously known as the photographer of both the Riel Rebellion (North-West Rebellion) and Louis Riel's trial for treason in 1885. A vignetted albumen silver photograph (4.5 x 7.75 inches) mounted onto a maroon colored, beveled-edge boudoir card (5.25 x 8.5 inches), bearing Buell's imprint in the lower recto margin and his original typed caption "8556 Stoney Creek Bridge, Selkirks, B.C." on the verso. Fine.

Buell photographs are very scarce, especially ones that are executed in a vignette style, showing Buell's more artistic side. Buell may have occasionally produced some of his images for commercial purposes, however, this one is stamped in gilt "Compliments of Prof. Buell" on the card. Ref.
