Phobos, A Most Unusual Moon
Mars has two moons, the larger Phobos and the smaller Deimos. Phobos orbits just 3,700 miles (6,000 km) above the surface of Mars, the closest of any moon to its planet in the entire solar system. With just a tiny orbit around the Red Planet, Phobos circles Mars in just 7-1/2 hours! From the surface of Mars, Phobos appears to rise in the west, cross the sky in little more than 4 hours, and set in the east, twice each Martian day!

Mars in Science Fiction
Mars figures heavily in sci fi literature. It's easily the most storied planet, described in novels by the all-time greats:
• H.G. Well’s seminal War of the Worlds describes an invasion of Earth by the physically inferior but technologically advanced Martians.
• From the “turnabout is fair play” category: Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles explores the apocalyptic destruction of Martian civilization at the hands of humans.
• In Edgar Rice Burroughs A Princess of Mars, the first of the Martian Series starring John Carter, the Martians refer to their home world as Barsoom.
• C.S. Lewis called the red planet Malacandra in his sci-fi masterpiece Out of the Silent Planet.
• More recently, NASA astronaut Mark Watney got stranded on Mars in one of the greatest survival tales of all time, The Martian by Andy Weir. Don’t have time to read the book? The 2015 Ridley Scott film of the same name, starring Matt Damon, is excellent.

Obverse
A lone astronaut stands on the surface of Mars' largest moon, Phobos, watching the Red Planet rise against the backdrop of deep space. The legend MARS FROM PHOBOS denotes the theme.
