Biography

In 1892, Eugène Martel leaves Revest-du-Bion to settle in Avignon and meet Pierre Grivolas, director of the school of fine arts, who admitted him into his studio. Quickly convinced of his gifts, the latter sent him toParis School of Fine Arts in the workshop Gustave Moreau2. He becomes friends with Simon Bussy with whom he shared an apartment from 1892 to 1898, first at 24 rue de Visconti then at 41 rue Bourbon, on Île Saint-Louis. Their financial situation was precarious and Martel was later to confess that he shared the same pants with his friend, worn in turns, for official occasions.3.
Back on the Albion plateau in 1898, he expresses all his talents as a portraitist by sketching peasants and villagers of Haute-Provence2.
One of his rare landscapes dates from 1928, and is titled The Mistral Gate. The Albion plateau is presented there at the end of the afternoon, under an immense sky while the horizon is closed by the Ventoux massif2.
