A chess set For The Man Who Has Everything.
In 1972, Allan Troy, who owned the largest private chess business in the Americas, traveled to India. While there, he rode an elephant into the hinterlands of Punjab to commission chess sets. He had a limited run of horn sets made. Alas, we don't know exactly which Indian animal supplied the material of the horn; the paperwork is long lost.
These sets are from India. They were in boxes marked "Made in India," which I opened with my own hands. They were still in the original packaging from 1972.
Because of the natural coloration of the horn, one set is dark, almost black, while the other is vividly striped.
Cut in approximation of the Staunton style, the set is not exactly tournament legal. The kings stand about 3 1/8" tall with a base of 3/4". The pieces are hand-made; there is some variation in size and shape of the men.
This set an analysis-sized set. We add to the individuality of the set by adding in a pair of Vegas Fun Dice, along with the rules. If you have friends over for the evening who don't play chess very well, a fun time can be had by playing Chess Dice, as they did in the days of chauturanga, the ancient Indian game that was an early predecessor of modern chess.
We are adding in this brand-new board as well. The board is vinyl as can be seen in the photographs. The footprint of the board is about 13 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches; each playing square is about 1 7/16 inches. We put them in a cigar box for safe storage.
But there is still one more add-on. Every chess player fondly remembers the television show, "The Queen's Gambit." We are including the Funko-Pop model of Beth Harmon.
