Replaced Components

The 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) is built with the following suspension components:

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Electronic Shocks (x2) - These shocks are controlled electronically by the suspension control module. They reduce the wear and tear caused by travel over rough surfaces and smooth out the ride.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Air Springs (x4) - (models with air suspension only) These plastic and rubber air sacks sit on top of the struts to cushion the ride with pressurized air, rather than a spring. They are the most likely source if you are experiencing leaks in your Mercedes' air suspension.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Struts (x2) - These struts are essentially metal columns filled with a gas-charged hydraulic fluid. They are connected to each wheel of the vehicle and work to keep the vehicle suspended off of its wheels as well as reduce the bounciness of the ride.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Height Sensors (x4) - These linkages can be found adjacent to each wheel of the vehicle. Whenever the vehicle is on, they constantly measure the height of the ride and report that information back to the suspension control module. The module then uses this information to determine whether or not adjustments need to be made. Since they are moving parts they will eventually wear out.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Air Lines - These hoses carry pressurized air into the air springs from the compressor.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Solenoids (x4) - The solenoids, L-shaped plastic components, regulate the air pressure for each air spring. As they age, they will begin to leak which will cause the vehicle to sag or lean. This will in turn cause the compressor to work harder than normal to try and keep the system inflated.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Compressor Assembly - Like any air compressor, the air compressor on your Mercedes generates pressurized air and then pumps it out into the air springs. When other components fail or begin to leak, the compressor will start to overwork itself to try and keep everything inflated. It is one of the most expensive and difficult components to repair or replace, so it is important to monitor its health regularly.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) Suspension Control Module - This small onboard computer electronically manages the operations of the air suspension. It also ensures that the vehicle maintains its correct ride height.

2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 (4MATIC Sedan) O-rings - These small rubber o-rings keep a seal where the air lines connect. This keeps the system efficient and clean.

Suspension Failure Signs

A failing suspension can have serious consequences on the health of your 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 if they go unchecked, possibly causing uneven wear on your tires, a dead battery and more. Replacing bad air suspension components can cost thousands, and then add on a new battery and new tires and you can see how costs can snowball. A common complaint of E500 owners is the constant replacement of air suspension parts ($4000 to replace a pair of air struts) and how often the repairs are needed. Keep your costs down by immediately responding to common symptoms such as: leaning to one side, sagging in the front or rear, a suspension warning light on the dash, or the sound of your compressor running often.

If you notice any of these symptoms there are some easy ways you can make before taking it to the dealer. If you have a warning light or the compressor is running often but the Mercedes is maintaining its proper ride height then it is possible you have a bad relay and fuse. If the car is sagging or leaning it is likely you have a leak, so you'll want to check all air parts including lines, connections, and seals for leaks using a soapy water solution. A failing air suspension should be taken seriously and repaired as soon as possible.

OEM Replacement Cost

  • Front Air Strut Assemblies ($1,500/strut) +
  • Rear Electronic Shocks ($540/shock) +
  • Rear Air Spring ($1,000/air spring) +
  • Air Compressor Assembly ($740)
Total = Over $6,800 (and that doesn't even include replacing electronic components that are known to fail such as the height sensors).

Why Strutmasters

The AirMatic air suspension system on your 2003-2009 Mercedes Benz E500 is made up of a variety of assorted air and electrical parts that must work together properly at all times. The parts can be expensive to repair or replace individually and replacing just a pair of air struts can cost you thousands. Our customers are tired of spending a fortune at the dealership making constant repairs to the air suspension and are looking for a smarter solution. We created our air-to-non-air suspension conversion kit to eliminate your dependency on air parts.

Our kit, for your E500, includes our custom-designed suspension warning light elimination module, two pre-assembled front coil-over struts with top-quality coil springs, two rear coil springs and two passive hydraulic fluid and gas shocks for the rear end of your Mercedes. The kit is installed in only about an hour per wheel using our easy-to-follow instructions and installation videos. We designed the kit to be affordable without sacrificing ride quality. Let's compare three different solution costs: repairing your air suspension system at the Mercedes Benz dealer, installing aftermarket air parts on your E500 piece-by-piece, or getting rid of the air ride headache for good and installing a Strutmasters coilover suspension conversion kit.
