German Tank Crew (1943-1945)

German soldiers (WW2)

The first tanks in the German army appeared at the end of the First World War - these were A7V vehicles. After the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the German armed forces were prohibited from developing armored weapons, but the German side did not comply with these restrictions and secretly developed armored weapons. However, after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, this development became fully official, and the 1st Panzer Division was formed in 1935.
Before the invasion of the USSR, the number of German tank divisions almost doubled, but the number of tanks in these units decreased to approximately 150-200 vehicles. Also, during the fighting on the Eastern Front - especially in 1941-1942 - German tank forces were superior in training and organization to their Soviet opponent. However, contact with vehicles such as the T-34 or KW-1 forced the introduction of Pz.Kpfw V and VI tanks into the line in 1942 and 1943. Growing losses on the Eastern Front, as well as lost battles - near Stalingrad or Kursk - weakened the German Panzerwaffe.
