German Assault Troops WW I (1917-1918)

German soldiers (WW1)

Entering World War I, the German army adopted highly offensive infantry tactics, using large-scale artillery support. However, the disastrous experience of trench warfare in late 1914 and early 1915 pushed the German army to search for new infantry tactics. The result of this search was the creation of the Stosstruppen divisions (also called Sturmtruppen), i.e. infantry units specially trained for positional combat, widely using light machine guns and hand grenades.
Chemical weapons missiles were used on a large scale. Stosstruppen units were first used in 1915, but were used on a larger scale at the Battle of Verdun, especially during the so-called Kaiserschlacht in 1918.
