The U.S. Postal Service issued this Wedding Dove self-adhesive 39¢ stamp in New York, NY on March 1, 2006. The stamp design is by artist Michael Osborne from Berkeley, CA, and features a stylized dove sitting on a branch and a heart - surrounded by calligraphic flourishes on a lavender background.

As part of the creative process, Michael Osborne researched vintage penmanship books, where he found calligraphic designs used to embellish love letters of the 18th and 19th centuries. Osborne based the calligraphic flourishes in his stamp design on Spencerian script, an elegant mid-19th century form of cursive penmanship - named for the American penman Platt Rogers Spencer, who developed this elegant script that revolutionized handwriting in the U.S.
