NAVAJO MINIATURE ETCHED POTTERY Artist: This miniature pot was created by DeAnn Largo, a local Navajo artist. DeAnn is of the Mountain Cove Clan. We have included a photo of her holding some of her beautiful art work on this page. DeAnn, who learned to make pottery from a family member, has been an experienced craftswoman since 2005. Materials: Navajo Etched Pottery is painted on a wheel while the clay is still soft. Designs are incised through the paint layer into the soft clay pots. The score lines, made with fine carving tools, become part of the design and the resulting art piece is called Sgraffitto. Etched art is done on either red terracotta clay or white gypsum clay, and after being fired, the resulting design will show the bright white background or the earth-colored red background seen on the various pieces. Size: This pot is 3" high by 2 1/4 " wide. Traditional Background: The Native people of Arizona and New Mexico have been making pottery for about two thousand years. Their ceramics reveal a love of grace and beauty as well as skills refined over the centuries. Pottery is an honored tradition among the tribes in the Southwest. Pottery still pays a role in some of the ancient ceremonies. The Artists' Card with Photo is Enclosed with this Pottery!!! Crystal Trading Post was named for the Crystal Chapter on the Navajo Nation.
