The Malay Archipelago:
The Land of the Orang-Utan and the
Bird of Paradise, A Narrative of Travel
with Studies of Man and Nature

by Alfred Russel Wallace
in an 1898 leatherbound edition

Description:

An 1898 reprint of the 1890 issuance. Alfred Russel Wallace's study of the Malay Archipelago in southeast Asia was originally published in 1869 in two volumes. Includes 51 engraved illustrations (including a tissue-guarded frontis image) and 10 maps, including 2 which fold-out and are tinted. Mr. Wallace explored this area for 8 years, covering 14,000 miles by foot and on native canoes, amassing a collection of 125,000 species of insects and animals. His book, per a different edition, ". . .is still one of the great classics of natural history and travel." Also with appendix and index.

Beautifully bound in full brown diced calf, with gilt double fillets, tiny gilt cupid's arrows tied with ribbons to corners of covers, and spine with gilt titling, decorations including more arrows and five raised bands. Edges of covers with gilt dentelles, endpapers in maroon/cream/blue marbled papers, AEG (all edges gilt).

This copy was apparently presented as a composition prize at England's Harrow School for the years 1902-3 to R. O. Morris, with discreet inked notation to that effect on a front leaf, also with Harrow bookplate to front paste-down. An about Very Good+ copy: tightly-bound and sound, though with mild chafing at head of spine and slightly discolored front cover. Volume wrapped in clear, removable archival mylar protector.

*A NOTE ABOUT USED BOOKS AND CONDITION VALUES:
I rate books and dust jackets on a scale from AS NEW to POOR, as follows:
AS NEW - Used when the book or dust jacket is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published, with no defects.
FINE - Approaches the condition of AS NEW, but lacking the crispness of a new book. These books or dust jackets should have no defects.
NEAR FINE - Approaching FINE but with slight flaws.
VERY GOOD - Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some small signs of wear or slight damage.
GOOD - Describes the average used worn book or jacket that has flaws and/or damages. (An old bookseller said it best, "In rare books, Good ain't good".)
FAIR - Worn book or jacket that is stained, has loose pages, tears, or otherwise has some sort of significant damage or other issue.
POOR - Describes a book that is worn, damaged, stained or otherwise beat-up, making it useful as a reading copy but possibly not a collector copy. A POOR dust jacket is likely heavily torn, chipped or otherwise damaged.

(A  ' + ' or a ' - ' can indicate a shading of these values...either a nudge up, or a nudge down.)
