Amethyst is a purple variety of the quartz mineral species and is the 

gemstone most commonly associated with the color purple. It is a hard and 

durable gemstone, measuring 7 on the Mohs scale 2. In its rough state, the 

gem often forms in long prismatic crystals, making it ideal for cutting. 

Amethyst is also known for its stunning colors and ability to stimulate the mind and emotions.

A cabochon gemstone features a polished domed surface in contrast to a faceted cut.
