In 1940, Juley & Son, New York City’s oldest art photography studio, moves into offices in the
B.F. Goodrich Company Building, at 225 West 57th Street. The Rodin Studios were across the street at 200 West 57th Street. And Steinway Hall was one block east, at 111 West 57th Street. The Peter A. Juley & Son studio continued until Paul’s death in
1975. At that time, the studio’s negatives were acquired by the
Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American Art. Peter A. Juley & Son was
the among the preeminent photographers of fine art and artists in NYC.
Photographic studio. Peter A. Juley (1862-1937) and Paul P. Juley
(1890-1975) specialized in photographing works of art and taking
portraits of artists, serving museums, galleries, art dealers, private
collectors, corporations, conservators, and nearly every major American
artist of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Provenance: the Juley Collection consists of prints made from 127,000 original negatives
that have been housed since 1975 in the photographic archive of the
National Museum of American Art. These images represent the largest
single photographic record of American art, of the
works of more than 11,000 artists and 4,500 portraits of artists. While
the originals generally date to 1896-1975, the years of the Juleys'
activity, many images predate 1896, as other photographic firms left
their negatives to Juley
Turn-of-the-century patrons included George Inness, Albert Pinkham
Ryder, John La Farge, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Eakins. In the period
preceding the 1913 Armory Show, the works of Robert Henri, John Sloan,
George Luks, Arthur B. Davies, Maurice Prendergast, and the avant-garde
group associated with Alfred Stieglitz and the Gallery 291 were
photographed. During the 1930s and 1940s, the work of regional artists
Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood were recorded,
and later the works of Abstract Expressionists Hans Hofmann and Robert
Motherwell (450 items). Totals for other artists include: George Bellows
(344), Paul Manship (329), John Singer Sargent (203), and Edward Hopper
(122)

The seeds of the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation were planted
in 1968 when Fritz Lohman and Charles Leslie held a gallery show of
gay erotic art in their Soho loft. In 1990 they became a foundation
dedicated to preserving art which many in the art world used to
destroy. Ed Cervone "Three Sailor's". Or perhaps Patrick Angus'
Hanky Panky - set in an adult peep show movie house. Darold Perkins has taken an
Arrow Shirt ad and turned it into an ad instead. Next in the Drawings
and Prints category we particularly love Paul Cadmus; the explicit
Andy Warhol drawings -- he wasn't Tom of Finland.... but much more
than Campbell's Tomato Soup
We offer modern firsts, original
photography, the arts, and gay erotica. You will also find a fine
selection of signed copies, limited editions, and memorabilia because
the goal is to deepen the pleasure of collecting.
