The U.S. Postal Service issued this 4-cent Chippendale Chair pane of 20 adhesive stamps on March 5, 2004 in New York, NY. It's the fourth in the American Design Series of low value definitive stamps (depicting Early American decorative arts masterpieces) that are now retired. The design is from a watercolor painting by Lou Nolan of McLean, VA.

This stamp features the artist's stylized treatment of a Chippendale chair with an elaborately carved back and cabriole, or curved, legs. The artist based his design on a Chippendale side chair, or chair without arms, made in Philadelphia between 1760 and 1765. The chair is part of the collection of decorative arts in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC.
