A NEW ROUTE FROM EUROPE TO INDIA AND THE FAR EAST
SEE THE CRADLE OF MANKIND VIA IRAQI STATE RAILWAYS
Baghdad - Kish - Ctesiphon - Ur of the Chaldees - Babylon - Basrah
The Holy Cities : Karbala - Najaf - Kadhimain - Samarra

In 1932, Iraq — conquered by the British from the Ottomans in World War I — became an independent kingdom.
The Iraqi State Railways took over the completion of the Baghdad Railway from the British military from 1936 onwards. The new Iraqi railways did not only target tourists who came to see the archaeological treasures of Babylon and Nineveh. They also welcomed passing travellers, mainly British, to India and the Far East. This overland route provided a connection to ships across the Persian Gulf via Basra.
