The Order of the Rising Sun is a Japanese order, established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan. The Order was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese government, created on April 10, 1875, by decree of the Council of State. The Order of the Rising S­­­un (Kyuokujit-susho) medal was awarded by the Japanese government to both military and civilian personnel for general merit and was given both to Japanese and to foreign individuals. Made of silver, the design is of a paulonia leaf, symbolizing the Imperial Family

The order is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in the following fields: international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment. Prior to the end of the Second World War, it was also awarded for exemplary military service.
