Shoe Lace Repair

If you need to repair or shorten some shoe laces, this listing offers some aglets (shoelace ends) for you. They are available in a choice of green, red, white or blue (although if you require clear or black aglets, please see our separate listing - item number 155217638018).

The aglets can be used on most laces and are very easy to attach. The end of the lace is inserted into the aglet, which has an inbuilt shrinking action when heat is applied, and it will typically shrink down around the lace to about half its initial diameter.  Hair straighteners, a naked flame or boiling water are all viable heat applications to shrink the aglets although full instructions will be sent with your order. The aglets come in the following (unshrunk) diameters:
  • 4.8 mm (approx 0.19 inches) reducing to approx. 2.4 mm when shrunk) - suitable for broader flat laces, most ribbons and medium duty laces
  • 3.2 mm (approx 0.125 inches) reducing to approx 1.6 mm when shrunk) - suitable for the majority of other, thinner laces including round, oval and some flat laces
We have found that some buyers are unsure which size aglet may be required so offer a Full Monty option which is a choice of either 4 or 8 aglets of each diameter, Please also note that we have a separate listing for clear (transparent) and black aglets and this also offers 2 additional diameters of 6.4 mm and 2.4 mm. These would suitable for heavy duty, thick laces or very narrow laces. It is Ebay item number 155217638018  and if you enter this number in the search box, it will take you there.

We can tell you that an aglet is typically 20 mm (approx 0.75 inch)long although unless you advise us to the contrary, your order will be dispatched in single lengths of 160 mm (8 x 20 mm) and  this will minimize wastage for you by enabling you to cut the aglet to the exact length you require. Please note that the shrink feature of the aglets affects just the diameter and not the length. Please also note that the stated diameter sizes are the internal measurement. Please let us know if you would prefer any different variation of sizes as we will always be happy to accommodate. It is in any event important to try and buy the smallest unshrunk diameter that you think will accept the end of your lace or ribbon. This will give the best, neatest and tightest fitting result.

It is important for you to be aware that the aglets on commercially produced laces, such as those that come with new shoes, are produced using ultrasonic heating or plastic moulding machines that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. It is consequently unlikely that your home produced laces/aglets will have a similar professional quality but the use of this heat shrink method is however universally accepted as a safe and, to most people, reasonable alternative.
