This is among a large number of playbills currently being listed from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York ....... This is a rare September 28th, 1922 program (playbill) with a rare newspaper clipping from the three-night, Pre-Broadway engagement of the FREDERICK LONSDALE, CYRUS WOOD, HARRY GRAHAM, JEAN GILBERT and ALFRED GOODMAN musical "THE LADY IN ERMINE" at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. (The Original Broadway production would open October 2nd, 1922 at the Ambassador Theatre in New York City, transfer on January 29th, 1923 to the Century Theatre and close April 21st, 1923 after 238 performances.) ..... The musical starred Miss WILDA BENNETT and the cast included WALTER WOOLF, HARRY (Henry) FENDER, HARRY CONOR (replaced out-of-town by IGNACIO MARTINETTI), ROBERT CALLEY, TIMOTHY DALEY, DETMAR POPPEN, NEIL EVANS, MURRAY MINEHART, ROBERT WOOLSEY, MARIE BURKE, HELEN SHIPMAN and GLADYS WALTON ..... CREDITS: Book by FREDERICK LONSDALE and CYRUS WOOD from the book by RUDOLPH SCHANZER and ERNEST WELISCH; Lyrics by HARRY GRAHAM and CYRUS WOOD; Music by JEAN GILBERT and ALFRED GOODMAN; Orchestra conducted by OSCAR BRADLEY; Sets designed by WATSON BARRATT; Ballets by ALLAN K. DETAILS: The twenty page playbill measures 5 3/4" X 8 3/4" inches and includes production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising, but no cast photos or bios ..... BONUS: Includes a newspaper clipping with illustrations by famed artist JEFFERSON MACHAMER (1900 – 1960) from an unidentified New York newspaper. Machamer had just moved to New York City from Kansas City, Missouri and joined the staff of the humor magazine Judge. (Wikipedia) ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is slight discoloration to the title page where the newspaper clipping was stored, a light vertical crease, a corner fold at the top right and moderate edge wear. There is a tear and some paper loss at the bottom edge of the newspaper clipping. Despite these flaws, this rare playbill will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
