PLAY MERRY-GO-ROUND

By Rudolph J. Gutmann, with illustrations by Leonard Weisgard, Robin King, and Doris Stolberg
1944

Charming pop-up merry-go-round paper toy with four panoramas to insert and rotate, including illustrations by Caldecott Medal-winning artist Leonard Weisgard - complete and unused.

Fine in very good plus portfolio.

This moveable paper merry-go-round was the ideal replacement for once-popular tin toys, which stopped being produced in this period to provide metals for the American war effort in WWII. Able to be assembled without glue, when completed, it measures 8" in diameter. Included are four "indestructible" panoramas: one is entirely by Leonard Weisgard entitled Let's Play, a second is half by Weisgard and half by Doris Stolberg featuring children on a merry-go-round, third is by Robin King entitled Let's Eat and the last is Merry-Go-Round by Doris Stolberg. An unusual item in unused condition.

New York: J. L. Schilling Co, 1944. 8'' x 7.5'' (panoramas, folded); 8'' x 43.25'' (panoramas, unfolded); 9'' x 15'' (portfolio). Four accordion-fold color pictorial panoramas, printed on both sides. In original color pictorial portfolio, with die-cut color pictorial pieces and figures. Portfolio with light edgewear, a bit of foxing; some die-cut pieces becoming detached, old remnant of tape to back. Panoramas sharp and bright.
