THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

By William Shakespeare
1805

Gorgeously bound 9-volume set of Shakespeare, all uniformly bound in early 19th-century full tree calf with elaborately gilt-stamped spines.

Near fine.

This set uses the text edited by George Steevens, one of the most important commentators on the Bard and a central figure in Shakespeare's apotheosis during the Georgian era to the title of England's greatest writer. Tree calf bindings, created by chemicals applied to the surface, which are then brushed out into branches like a tree, became popular in the late 19th century; they have the effect of marbling but on leather rather than on paper. A stunning set.
