In the winter of 2009, Todd Hido was approached by elementary school art instructor Wilhelm Matthies about using his photographs in class for the students to work from as a source of inspiration for some of their own exercises. The resulting book of four watercolors by 3rd grade students shows some of the remarkable paintings generated by the class. Each copy of the book contains 4 reproductions of watercolors, and one original signed photograph by Todd Hido.

Most of Todd Hido’s photographs of suburban landscapes are taken during solitary, long drives. The main subject of his work is the quality of natural and artificial light in the American landscape, as in reflected sunrays or the illumination of a television pouring from an anonymous window. Hido takes his pictures in a “fairly undirected way”, he says, but edits his negatives together and manipulates them until he produces an image that represents his encounter with a place. In describing his process, Hido said, “I shoot sort of like a documentarian, but I print like a painter.” He has also produced a number of interior shots featuring human figures, his models including his wife and former girlfriends.

Favoring dramatic light conditions, Todd Hido portrays his subject matter when vivid evening skies or overcast weather conditions add a distinct sense of sentimentality. Employing a pictorial language that unfolds slowly picture by picture, the effect is astonishingly cinematic. Forlorn roads lose themselves in aimless terrains, while heavy clouds hover above. Barren fields and edges of dark pine forests underline the simplicity of the scenery, the emergence of occasional power lines or telephone poles serves as theatrical effect. An overall dark mood settles deep into the landscape, reinforced by the remnants of recent showers. Sometimes captured from the driver's seat through a rainy windshield, each work has a hint of the surreal.

Drawn into this moody scenery, the viewer, alongside the artist, takes on the role of a lone traveler, who without map or compass is incited to contemplate what stretches endlessly ahead. While this Romantic concept of experiencing nature through the boundless emotional submission might lead one's associative thoughts as far back as the works of Caspar David Friedrich or members of the Hudson River School, Hido's process is unquestionably modern.

Todd Hido’s photographs have been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, and most recently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, Switzerland. Other major institutions that have exhibited Hido’s work include the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Miami Art Museum, Florida; Netherland Architecture Institute, Rotterdam; Palazzo Ducale, Genova, Italy; Samsung Museum of Modern Art in Korea; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work was recently on view in the 49th edition of Les Recontres d’Arles, France.

Work by Hido is held in public and private collections including the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Smithsonian; and Fotomuseum Winterthur.
